Carpet vs. LVP Flooring: Cost & Durability for Reno Homes

In Reno this is mostly a bedroom-and-upstairs question — main living areas have largely gone hard-surface already. Both price about the same installed, so the decision comes down to comfort, pets, allergies, and how long you want the floor to last.

As of September 2026, carpet installed in Reno runs $2–$6 / sq ft and LVP $2–$3 / sq ft — the two overlap, so cost rarely decides between them. Carpet wins on warmth, quiet, and comfort underfoot in bedrooms; LVP wins on lifespan, pets, allergies, and spills.

Cheapest floor on the market is still builder-grade carpet on a thin pad. But move to a mid-grade nylon and a proper 8-lb pad — the spec that actually lasts — and carpet costs as much as or more than most LVP, before stairs and removal. Over the life of the floor, LVP is almost always the lower-cost option because it is not replaced every decade.

Comfort, warmth, and noise

This is carpet's whole case, and it is a good one. Reno winter mornings are cold; a carpeted bedroom floor is warm to step onto, and a carpeted upstairs is far quieter for the rooms below than any hard surface. LVP is warmer than tile and softer than laminate, but it is still a hard floor — area rugs restore most of the comfort in bedrooms at extra cost, and upstairs footfall noise is real without a good acoustic underlayment. If the rooms in question are bedrooms where people walk barefoot and children play on the floor, carpet is a legitimate choice on its merits.

Pets, allergies, and spills

This is LVP's whole case. Carpet holds dust, dander, and pollen — and Reno's allergy seasons (spring tree pollen, late-summer sagebrush and rabbitbrush) are not mild. Pet accidents soak into the pad, where cleaning the carpet surface does not reach. LVP wipes clean, is waterproof through the core, and does not hold odors. A household with a dog, a cat, or anyone with allergies has a clear answer; the signs you need new flooring page covers how to tell when an existing carpet is past saving.

If you are replacing carpet with LVP

Budget for removal and disposal of the old carpet and pad, and for tack strip removal and any staple cleanup the LVP subfloor needs — this is real prep work. Removal has its own cost range (a national figure; see carpet removal and disposal cost) and is one of the few flooring tasks a homeowner can reasonably do themselves to save money.

Same license either way

Carpet and LVP installation both fall under Nevada's NSCB Classification C-16a ("Covering Floors"). Verify at https://app.nvcontractorsboard.com — see the contractor vetting guide.

Methodology

Reno-specific per-square-foot ranges (hardwood, LVP/vinyl, laminate, carpet, tile) are compiled from a September 2026 Reno-market pull covering hundreds of local quotes, including a 778-quote hardwood-specific dataset standardized to a 1,282 sq ft home (RENO-017). Where no Reno-specific figure exists — hardwood floor refinishing — the range shown is a national proxy (Angi, updated July 2026) and is labeled as national, not local, wherever it appears. Ranges are materials + labor for a typical installation and do not include subfloor repair, furniture moving, or old-flooring removal/disposal unless stated. Rechecked quarterly.

Carpet vs. LVP questions, Reno

Is carpet or LVP cheaper to install in Reno?

They overlap. As of September 2026, carpet installed in Reno runs $2–$6 / sq ft and LVP $2–$3 / sq ft. Entry-level carpet with a basic pad is the cheapest floor you can install; a mid-grade nylon with a good pad costs more than most LVP. Stairs and old-carpet removal add to carpet jobs specifically.

Which lasts longer, carpet or LVP?

LVP, usually by a wide margin. Residential carpet typically shows traffic-lane wear and matting within 5–15 years depending on fiber and pad; quality LVP carries wear warranties measured in decades and does not mat, stain, or hold odors. Carpet's real advantage is comfort and sound, not longevity.

Is LVP better than carpet for allergies and pets?

Yes on both. Carpet traps dust, dander, and pollen (Reno's spring and late-summer allergy seasons are real) and holds pet accidents in the pad where they are hard to fully remove. LVP wipes clean and is waterproof through the core. Households with dogs or allergy sufferers are the clearest case for LVP over carpet.

Do buyers in Reno still expect carpet in bedrooms?

Many do, and many are fine with LVP plus rugs. There is no Reno-specific resale dataset to settle it, so this page does not invent one. The practical pattern in local remodels is LVP through main living areas and either carpet or LVP-with-rugs in bedrooms, decided by comfort and budget rather than resale.

Can LVP go on stairs?

Yes, with matching stair-nose pieces, and it costs more per step than the flat square footage — similar to carpet, which is also priced per step on stairs. LVP stairs are harder underfoot and can be slippery in socks; carpet stairs are quieter and softer. Either is common.
